Secretary of State Elaine F. Marshall previously accepted the donation of a ceremonial veteran urn cover on behalf of the State of North Carolina and presented it today to Walter Gaskin, Secretary of the North Carolina Department of Military and Veteran Affairs (NCDMVA), during a ceremony at Western Carolina State Veteran Cemetery in Black Mountain.
This temporary display, on view throughout Black History Month, is a collaboration between NCDMVA, NC Museum of History, Elizabeth City State University School of Humanities and Social Sciences, and State Archives of NC to collect, preserve, and display NC’s Black veterans’ stories for future generations.
On Saturday, North Carolina Department of Military and Veterans Affairs Assistant Secretary of Veterans Affairs, Terry Westbrook, will present Cpl. Clevenger’s family with the “U.S. Army Corporal Leon E. Clevenger Day” proclamation, signed by Governor Roy Cooper.
